It's essential to start work on a solid foundation. Although some specialist metal roofing companies may recommend keeping the existing cladding for ecological, economic and allegedly additional protection reasons, it's important to note that this approach may seem advantageous in the short term, both for the customer and the contractor. However, from an ecological point of view, it's already too late, as shingles will inevitably end up in landfill, as they are in no way recyclable.
As far as savings are concerned, the cost of removing the existing coating, compared with the need to re-roof part of the metal roof due to defects unnoticed by the contractor, such as a rotten screw on the surface of the valleys or around a chimney, is minimal. That's why it's crucial to check the hidden condition beneath the old cladding before installing a roof guaranteed to last at least 50 years. We'll leave you to judge the importance of this step.
When it comes to protection, it's crucial to consider the fact that some contractors choose to leave 15-20 year-old cladding in place, in poor condition and damp, and install a supposedly breathable, moisture-wicking membrane over it. However, this is in stark contrast to Quebec's sometimes harsh temperatures. All metal roofs should be preceded by the application of a self-adhesive membrane, or at least a synthetic waterproof membrane, period.
We know you'll make the right choice!
